Bishop Spong’s Wise Words on Hell and the Afterlife
I was thrilled to see the spiritual developments in “liberal Christianity” as voiced by the retired Episcopalian bishop from Newark, N.J., John Shelby Spong. Spong rightly sees hell as an invention of the Church. My favorite quotation from him is, “God is not a Christian.” More important, he stresses that God cannot be contained in any human system, such as a religion. My way of naming God is All That Is and All That Is contains all things that exists now or in the past or in the future. That means God contains all religions, all spiritual systems, all philosophies; they do not contain God.
